The Number of Unemployed Decreased in the First Quarter Compared to the first Quarter of the Previous Year
According to Statistics Estonia, there were 39,600 unemployed in the first quarter, which was 9,200 less than in the same period of the previous year. However, compared to the last quarter of last year, there are 3,300 more unemployed, the unemployment rate was 5.2% in the last quarter of last year and 5.5% in the first quarter of this year.
More than half of the unemployed (55.6%) have been unemployed for a short time, that means less than six months. There are 11,100 long-term unemployed, that means people who have been unemployed for more than a year, which is a few thousand less than a year ago.
The number of employed was 675,300 in the first quarter of this year, which is 24,800 more than last year. The number of employed has increased in both the private and public sectors and is the highest in recent years.
